Charlotte honors our military and their families with family celebrations throughout the Queen City! Spending time with families and understanding the sacrifices made by our military men and women is an annual Queen City Memorial Day tradition!

Running on sneakers or speeding on four wheels, Charlotte loves a great race! Memorial Day offers opportunities to race in the Queen City while supporting our troops!

The U.S. National Whitewater Center celebrates Memorial Day on Sunday, May 26th!  Start your day with a 5-mile and 8-mile trail races.  Food and beverages, live music with Bonerama and an evening of spectacular fireworks to honor our troops wraps up the family fun.

Tega Cay  will host a Memorial Day 5k run and mile-long Family Walk on Monday, May 27th. The activities benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and Veterans of York County. A ceremony to honor and remember our fallen troops will be held at the Living Memorial Garden at 11:55 a.m.

The annual Coca-Cola 600 is a wonderfully patriotic and exciting way to spend Memorial Day. Thousands of troops and their families will be in attendance at the Charlotte Motor Speedway to watch the stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.  A patriotic pre-race salute to the U.S. Armed Forces will include an air parade with ten vintage war planes a patriotic fly over and an American Bald Eagle soaring overhead during the National Anthem.  Families can start the weekend early on Friday, May 24th with country music star Trace Adkins and the Coca-Cola Family Track Walk.  Take a walk with Tony Stewart, Danny Hamlin and Darrell Wallace

The Charlotte Knights will have a Military Appreciation Night on Monday, May 27th. The Knights will wear special jerseys in custom digital camouflage commemorating men and women of the military. Baseball is an all American, great way to spend Memorial Day with the family!

Novant Health Memorial Day Ceremony will solemnly honor those who have provided military service to our country on Thursday, May 31 at 1:00 pm, 200 Hawthorne Road in Charlotte. Special tributes and comments from veterans and guests will take place.

A Memorial Day Ceremony presented by the Mecklenburg County Veterans and Matthews American Legion will honor members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have lost their lives while serving our Nation. A salute and special tribute to vereans and POW/MIAs will be a part of the ceremony at Stumptown Park.

For those Veterans seeking artistic expression, the Matthews Community Center will offer free art classes! ART for VETERANS offers a series of free painting and drawing classes as a small thank you to Veterans for their service. Art classes, supplies and membership to the Matthews Artists Guild will be gifted.

Charlotte appreciates families and freedoms in the Queen City! We thank all our troops for the many freedoms made possible through their sacrifices!

“SPEED STREET” – that Wild & Crazy Race Week Has Begun! May 20, 2012

Yes, people, in the south, NASCAR is King (and the official sport of the state of North Carolina!).  If you’re new in town, it’s high time you increase your NASCAR know-how.  And this week, our own Charlotte, North Carolina is in the NASCAR spotlight – yes, it’s RACE WEEK!  The week kicked off with last night’s Sprint All Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord (just to the northeast of Charlotte for you super newbies!). This relatively light-hearted competition just netted Hendrick Motorsports’ driver Jimmie Johnson (in the #48 Lowes car – a fact you will soon commit to memory if you’re going to be a FAN!) a cool $1million paycheck (see http://www.thatsracin.com/#navlink=navdrop for all the details).  And the big race is yet to come, the Coca-Cola 600, being run this Sunday, May 27th, again at CMS.  It’s the biggest NASCAR event in the Charlotte of the year – and the longest race (600 miles, thus the name!).  With attendance of around 100,000 people, it’s relatively easy to still secure tickets – just go to http://www.charlottemotorspeedway.com for all the great info!

And more popular than many spring flings & festivals, this weekend’s (free!!) Speed Street Festival in downtown Charlotte sponsored by Food Lion really does have something for everybody – great food, live music with some of your (and/or your kids’!) favorite country and pop bands, appearances by NASCAR drivers and more!

For all the event information, including event scheduling, suggested parking and transportation info (remember the Lynx!), and general faq’s, see http://www.600festival.com.  It’s a good time, and you’ll really feel a part of the southern scene!  Also, the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum (www.nascarhall.com) will be wide open for business as well – make it a part of your entire NASCAR experience!

So join the fans, enjoy the rush of NASCAR racing, and Start Your Engines!!!
